We do not pour drain chemicals and hope. Lye and acid cleaners soften old PVC glue joints, pit galvanized pipe, and leave a dangerous surprise in the trap for the next person who opens it. A cable or a jetter removes the blockage and gives us information about why it formed.
What is actually clogging your drain
Kitchen lines collect grease, coffee grounds and the starchy film from pasta water. Grease goes down warm and liquid, then cools and coats the inside of the pipe a little more every day. In the older homes around Sinclair Inlet and the shipyard, that pipe is often 1-1/2 inch galvanized steel from the 1950s or 60s, and its inside is already rough with rust scale that grease grabs onto. By the time the sink is slow, the usable opening in the pipe can be the width of a pencil.
Bathroom drains are a different animal. Hair wraps around the crossbars of the tub drain and the pivot rod in the sink, and soap scum binds it into a mat. A toilet clog is usually an object: a toy, a cleaning wipe that was labeled flushable, a toothbrush that fell in. Those come out with a closet auger, and if they do not, we pull the toilet rather than push the object deeper into the line.
When more than one fixture backs up at once, the problem is past the branch lines and into the main drain or the sewer. Tree roots, a bellied section of pipe holding water and sludge, or a crushed spot where a driveway was poured over the line are the usual suspects around here. That is a main line job, and it is where the camera comes out.
Cable machines, closet augers and the hydro jetter
For sink, tub and shower drains we run a small-diameter cable with a cutting head sized to the pipe. The goal is to open the full diameter of the line, not just poke a hole through the center of the clog so it closes up again in three weeks. On a kitchen line that means multiple passes with a grease head, then running hot water to flush what the cable loosened.
Main lines get a sectional or drum machine with a 5/8 or 3/4 inch cable, usually from the exterior cleanout. If the house has no cleanout, which is common on older Port Orchard and Bremerton homes, we can go through a roof vent or pull a toilet. We also install cleanouts so the next time is faster and cheaper.
Grease-packed kitchen lines, scale-choked cast iron, and lines that have been cabled three times this year are candidates for hydro jetting. The jetter scours the pipe wall with high-pressure water instead of boring a tunnel through the clog. We own our own jetting truck, so we are not subcontracting that part or asking you to wait for a second company.
Why Kitsap and Mason County drains clog more than you would expect
A lot of homes out here are on septic, and a septic drain line behaves differently from a city sewer lateral. There is no municipal main carrying things away under grade; the line runs to a tank, and if the tank is full or the baffle is failing, the house drains slow down everywhere at once. Before we cable a septic home's main line we ask when the tank was last pumped, because a cable will not fix a full tank.
The rest of the story is water and roots. Rainy-season groundwater finds every crack in an old drain line, and cedar, fir and maple roots follow the moisture in. A line that drains fine all summer and backs up in November is a classic sign of roots and infiltration. We clear it, then recommend a camera inspection so you know whether this is a yearly maintenance item or a repair waiting to happen.
Waterfront and hillside homes add one more wrinkle: long drain runs with very little slope, or pumps lifting waste uphill to the street. Those lines hold sludge and need cleaning on a schedule, not just when they fail.

You will know the price before we start. Most single-fixture clogs are a modest service call. Main line clearing from an accessible cleanout is more, and a job that requires pulling a toilet or opening a wall is quoted as its own line item so there are no surprises on the invoice. If we open a line and the camera shows a broken or collapsed pipe, the drain cleaning charge stands and we give you a separate written estimate for the repair. You can take that estimate and think about it. Nobody is going to pressure you in your own driveway.
After the drain is open
We run water for several minutes to confirm the line carries at full flow, not just that the standing water went away. On kitchen lines we often run the camera afterward to show you the pipe wall. On main lines we always offer it, because a drain that clogged once has a reason, and the camera finds the reason.

Is it safe to use Drano or liquid drain cleaner first?
We would rather you did not. Chemical cleaners rarely remove a real clog, and they sit in the trap as caustic standing water that burns whoever opens the pipe next. They also damage older galvanized and some PVC joints. A plunger is fine; chemicals are not.
How do you clear a main sewer line?
Through the exterior cleanout with a sectional machine and a cutting head sized to the pipe. If there is no cleanout we can go through a roof vent or pull a toilet, and we will suggest adding a cleanout so future cleaning is quicker.
What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
A cable bores through a clog and cuts roots. A jetter uses high-pressure water to scrub the entire inside wall of the pipe, which is better for grease, scale and sludge. We own both and recommend the one your pipe actually needs.
My drains are slow and I have a septic system. Is that a plumbing problem?
Sometimes. A full or failing septic tank slows every drain in the house, and no amount of cabling fixes that. We ask about the tank first. If the tank is fine and one line is slow, that is a drain cleaning job.

Will drain cleaning damage old pipes?
